WMBL: Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Swift Current, Weyburn Game 3 winners

WMBL Round Up – August 3

Western Division

Game 3: Okotoks 11 at Edmonton 1

The Okotoks Dawgs used a five-run fourth inning to ignite their offence and grab a 11-1 victory over the Edmonton Prospects. The Dawgs now lead the best of five series 2-1.

Starter Graham Brunner was lights out on the hill for Okotoks. He threw six scoreless innings before handing things over to the Dawgs’ bullpen to finish things off for the win.

The Dawgs chased Prospects starter Taran Oulton in the fourth inning after he was victimized for five runs.

Cameron Campbell led the Dawgs offensively with three hits, two runs and two RBI. Okotoks catcher Joel Brophy chipped in with three RBI and two hits.

Jake Lanferman was the lone offensive spark as he had two of the four Edmonton hits.

Okotoks will look to close out the series on Friday night as Game 4 will be played in Edmonton.

Game 3: Lethbridge 6 at Medicine Hat 9

Medicine Hat grabbed a 2-1 series lead with an impressive 9-6 come-from-behind victory over Lethbridge. The Bulls raced out to a 6-0 lead before the Mavericks battled back with nine unanswered runs on 12 hits.

The Bulls got a quality start from Surrey, B.C., native Wesley Moore. The lefty lasted six complete innings. He allowed just three runs on seven hits while fanning two Mavericks batters. Lethbridge’s relief corps came on and gave up six runs in two innings. Louis Corral took the loss.

Tyler Skinner started for Medicine Hat. He turned in a five-inning performance with a line score of five runs on four hits and three walks. Barry Caine’s three innings of relief earned him the win with Conner Deeds picking up his second playoff save. 

Alex Bishop led the Bulls charge with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.

Offensively for the Mavericks, Alabama native Rock Jordan had a pair of hits and teammate Jackson Freed also had two hits including a double and three RBI in the win.

Game four will be played in Medicine Hat at Athletic Park on Friday night.

Eastern Division

Game 3: Swift Current 8 at Moose Jaw 4

The Swift Current 57’s came out swinging in Game 3 as they powered their way to an 8-4 win over Moose Jaw at Ross Wells Park.  

Both bullpens played a key role in this game as the starters were on a short leash. Matt Michalski who lasted 4 2/3 innings for the 57’s was given the win while Bo Sheridan was pulled part way through the third frame and tagged with the loss.

Swift Current was sparked by right fielder Nick Canas and leadoff hitter Thomas DeBonville. Canas reached base five times on three hits and two walks, while DeBonville had two hits, two runs and two RBI.

Adam Cook was a bright spot for Moose Jaw going 2-for-3 with a homer for the Miller Express.

Game 3: Weyburn 6 at Regina 4

This one needed extra innings as the Weyburn Beavers sent the 720 Red Sox fans in attendance home disappointed when Carlos Flores singled and scored Anthony Wiggins from third to give Weyburn a 6-4 win. With the victory the Beavers have a 2-1 lead and can end the series on Friday at Currie Field.

Both starting pitchers, Regina’s Brendan Hornung and Weyburn’s Carson Perkins left the game after throwing seven innings. Preston Minor was tagged with the loss for Regina while Cody Pamperin earned the win with Eric Evans picking up the save.

Luis Jimenez had a great night in the field and at the plate. The second baseman from the University of Rio Grande flashed the leather making some outstanding plays in the field while also banging out three hits.

Broderick Rodocker was solid at the plate for Regina, he produced two hits and two RBI in the game.
