Women’s Baseball World Cup: Canada defeats Hong Kong

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Alexane Fournier (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.) had five hits and drove in two runs to pace Canada’s 16-hit attack as they earned a 22-3 victory over Hong Kong at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A.

The game was declared complete after five innings due the WBSC’s “run ahead” rule.

Zoe Hicks (Boissevain, Man.) kept her hot bat going with a 3-for-3 performance that included a pair of RBIs and three runs scored while Kaitlyn Ross (Redcliff, Alta.) added three hits of her own, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Eight Canadian hitters recorded at least one hit with Ela Day-Bédard (Gatineau, Que) having three RBIs on her stat line.

Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with Hicks collecting an RBI single before adding five runs in the second, three in the third and six runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Canada was aided offensively by three Hong Kong errors and 15 walks issued.

Julia Konigshofer (Waverly, N.S.) worked three innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run while Amy Johnson (Saskatoon, Sask.) struck out five batters over two perfect innings of work.

Canada will face the United States on Thursday as the tournament shifts to Port Arthur Stadium in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
