Women’s Baseball World Cup: USA too much for Canada

Thunder Bay, Ont. – The United States received a grand slam from Olivia Pichardo and a three-run homer from Kelsie Whitmore as they handed Canada a devastating 23-0 loss at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A.

A big crowd was on hand for Canada’s first game at Port Arthur Stadium and the home side kept it close through three innings, trailing by just three runs before the US exploded for 10 runs in the fourth before adding another 10 in the fifth.

The game was declared complete after five innings due the WBSC’s “run ahead” rule.

The loss puts Canada’s record at 2-1 while Team USA takes sole possession of first place in the six-team tournament at 3-0.

Canada was only able to muster three hits off USA starter Jillian Albayati with a pair of base hits coming off the bat of Ela Day-Bédard (Gatineau, Que.) while Sena Catterall (Pierrefonds, Que.) had the other.

Mena Florio (Vaughan, Ont.) tossed 1 1/3 innings on the mound while Jaida Lee (St. John’s, Nfld.), Alexane Fournier (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.), Amy Johnson (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Emily Baxter (Oakville, Ont.) also saw action.

Canada will face South Korea (0-3) on Friday at Port Arthur Stadium with the first pitch set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
