WASHINGTON, DC – The development series between Baseball Canada’s Women’s National Team Program and USA Baseball’s Women’s National Team Development Program concluded with the U.S. taking both ends of a split-squad doubleheader at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Development Complex.
The seven-game series finished with both teams going 3-3-1.
USA Stripes broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the third before scoring five in the fourth to eventually come away with an 11-5 win.
Designated hitter Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.) enjoyed a 2-for-4 game at the plate including a double and drove in two runs while Allison Schroder (Fruitvale, B.C.) smacked a double and scored twice.
On the mound, Mena Florio (Vaughan, Ont.) tossed two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out two batters.
After scoring three runs in the fist inning, USA Stars added three more in the third to hold off Canada Leaf, 9-3.
Daphnée Gélinas (Québec City, Que.) and Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alta.) both singled in the third with Gélinas eventually scoring on a balk, while Amanda Asay’s (Prince George, B.C.) single to right brought in Luchanski.
Gélinas reached on a walk in the fifth and later came around to score on an error for Canada Leaf’s third run.
Noémie Lapointe (Laval, Que.) did not allow an earned run over two innings on the mound and struck out one.
Athletes, coaches and staff will return home on Monday. The Women’s National Team Program will now set their sights on preparations for the 2018 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.
