Sycamores Clinch Series at #20 Florida Atlantic; Pick Up Sixth-Straight Road Win

By Timothy McCaughan

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Indiana State tallied its sixth-straight win Friday evening after defeating No. 20 Florida Atlantic, 10-2, inside FAU Baseball Stadium. With the victory, the Sycamores clinched the series and improved to 9-4 on the season while the Owls moved to 8-5.

Geremy Guerrero was once again impressive on the mound, totaling 13 punch outs in seven and a third innings. The lefty allowed just five base hits, one run and issued only one free pass in the start as he improved to 2-0 on the season. Guerrero sat down FAU in order in three separate innings during the start and allowed only one hit from the fourth to the seventh inning. As a team, ISU sat down FAU on strikeouts 15 times as both Ross Kramer and Will Buraconak added a strikeout each in relief.

Indiana State was superb at the plate with under pressure, picking up all six runs in the second inning with two outs. Miguel Rivera reached base on a single before Ellison Hanna II was plunked with two outs to begin the rally. The Sycamores picked up back-to-back RBI singles from Diego Gines and Josue Urdaneta to go ahead 2-0 before FAU looked to get out of the inning but overthrew second base on a fielder’s choice to score a run. ISU took advantage of the miscue with three more runs. Redshirt senior C Max Wright (Toronto, Ont.) doubled to the gap in left to plate two runs and Brian Fuentes added the sixth run of the inning with a single up the middle. Wright also walked twice.

Fuentes added another run in the fourth followed by a base knock to left from Sean Ross to put the Sycamores ahead 8-0. Gines put the final runs across in the eighth when he hit a two-run home run to left – his second homer of the season.

ISU finished the day with 11 hits – the sixth game in-a-row that the team has recorded double digit hits. Gines led the Sycamores with two hits and three RBI while Fuentes added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Urdaneta joined the multi-hit club with two of his own while five other Sycamores recorded base hits on the day.
