Official Indiana State Athletics News Release

ST. LOUIS - Great Lake Canadians alum Max Wright of Indiana State and Ariana Cranston of Illinois State are this week's featured athletes in the MVC Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.

To qualify for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their campus involvement and community service.

Wright has a 3.70 GPA in sports management as a senior on the Sycamores' baseball team. A Toronto native, Wright saw action in four games after coming back from an injury. He recorded three base hits and drew four walks for a .444 on-base percentage in a shortened 2020 season.

Around the community, Wright has spent time volunteering with the Terre Haute Little League, offering free clinics to local youth, as well as volunteering during ISU Baseball Clinics. He also spent time working with ISU facilities during volleyball, track and field and swim meets.

In 2019, Wright became just the fourth player in program history to earn CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American status. He was the seventh player in program history to earn Academic All-District honors as well as earning First-Team Scholar-Athlete honors from the MVC.

Illinois State senior Ariana Cranston is a Molecular and Cellular Biology major with a 3.84 GPA on the track and field team. The senior competed in eight meets during her final indoor campaign, finishing in the top-3 in the pole vault four times this season, including three first-place finishes. Cranston recorded an indoor personal-best clearance of 4.02 meters (13-2.25 ft.) at the Alex Wilson Invitational to place third, marking the No. 2 clearance in Illinois State indoor track & field history.

Cranston is active around the Illinois State campus and community. On campus, she is the Community Service Coordinator officer for SAAC and a former member of Leadership Academy. She has also spent time volunteering with the Pen Pal Program, at Advocate Bromenn Hospital, and the Down Syndrome walk. She has also spent time as a lunch buddy at Oakdale Elementary.
