And a happy 2010 Canada Day to you, too! Time to select our ninth annual Team Canada lineup. When we began this was a mythical team, like the original pitching staff for March’s World Baseball Classic. Everyone will show for this team since participation is mandatory due to a decree by national treasure/Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.), who threw out the first pitch Wednesday afternoon at the Rogers Centre. And everyone happens to be healthy after being examined by Dr. Ron Taylor. We have a few candidates to choose from: 18 Canadians on major league rosters; 109 in the minors or foreign lands; 34 in independent leagues and 706 collegians south of the border. Our lineup (stats as of June 30): _ Leading off will be catcher Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) .247 batting average, one homer and 21 runs batted in for the Los Angeles Dodgers. _ Batting second is Kansas City Royals third baseman Mark Teahen (St. Marys, Ont.), .281, nine, 28. _ In the No, 3 hole is Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau (New Westminister, B.C.) .309, 17, 61, the former American League most valuable player award winner. _ Hitting clean-up is centre fielder Jason Bay (Trail, BC) .277, 19, 69 from the Boston Red Sox. He becomes a dual citizen July 2 when he becomes an American citizen. _ DH Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) .351, nine, 37 of the Cincinnati Reds is next. _ Hitting sixth comes the tip of the next talent wave in right fielder Mike Saunders (Victoria, BC) .303, 10, 26 at triple-A Tacoma a Seattle Mariners farmhand. _ Next is Scott Thorman (Cambridge, Ont.) .300, 13, 30 at triple-A Omaha from the Royals organization. Thorman switched from first base to left field when he switched organizations and hit 13 homers in his first 38 games. _ Batting eighth is second baseman Peter Orr (Newmarket, Ont.) .236, five, 23 at triple-A Syracuse, a Washington Nationals farmhand. _ And hitting ninth is Cale Iorg (Toronto, Ont.) .221, six, 21 at double-A Erie of the Detroit Tigers and the son of ex-Blue Jay Garth Iorg. Manager Ernie Whitt (from the Windsor suburb of Clinton Township, Mich.) will give the ball to Seattle’s Erik Bedard (Navan, Ont.) 5-2 won-loss record, 2.47 earned run average in the opener. The rest of the rotation will be back-to-back Chicago Cubs starters Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) 4-5, 4.09 and Rich Harden (Victoria, B.C.) 4-4, 4.95, Scott Richmond (Vancouver, B.C) 6-4, 3.68 of the Jays and finally Jeff Francis (North Delta, B.C.) of the Colorado Rockies. In the bullpen will be Shawn Hill (Georgetown, Ont.) 1-1, 5.25 of the San Diego Padres; Jesse Crain (Toronto, Ont.) 2-3. 8.15, the set-up man for the Twins and Blake Hawksworth (North Vancouver, B.C.) 0-0, 4.70 with the St. Louis Cardinals and 5-4, 3.92 at triple-A Memphis. Other arms will be Chris Leroux (Mississauga, Ont.) 3-2, 3.67 at double-A Jacksonville, who has pitched in two games with the Florida Marlins; Seattle’s Phillippe Aumont (Gatineau, Que.) 2-2 3.03, with 13 saves combined at double-A West Tennessee and class-A High Desert; David Davidson (Thorold, Ont. 0-1, 3.00 at triple-A Indianapolis, triple-A New Orleans who also pitched one game with the Marlins and R.J. Swindle (Vancouver, B.C.) 2-1 0.79, triple-A Nashville and the Milwaukee Brewers. Back-up catchers will be George Kottaras (Markham, Ont.) .227, zero, eight of the Red Sox and Luke Carlin(Aylmer, Que.) .287, four, 23 at triple-A Reno, who was in two games with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Also on the bench will be pinch hitter Matt Stairs (Fredericton, N.B.) .296, three 12 of the Philadelphia Phillies; infielder Jonathan Malo (Laval, Que.) .310, one, 10 at double-A Binghamton from the New York Mets; outfieldersNick Weglarz (Stevensville, Ont.) .257, 12, 55 at double-A Akron and the Cleveland Indians; and Rene Tosoni(Coquitlam, B.C.) .275, nine, 45 at double-A New Britain and the Twins.
