2011 Canadians in the June draft
By Bob Elliott
The 2014 June draft is 46 months away.
Plenty of time for things to change.
Yet, if the Perfect Game scouting service is accurate the Toronto Mets will have a first rounder in 2014.
Gareth Morgan, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound Toronto outfielder is ranked third overall on the top 50 Perfect Game high school prospects for 2014.
Shortstop Drew Ward from Leedey Oak. is ranked the No. 1 prospect, infielder Bryson Brigman from San Jose, Calif. is second and Morgan is third in North America.
It’s the highest a Canadian has ever been ranked.
After impressing at the Under Armour showcase at Wrigley Field, playing for coaches Hall of Famer Cal Ripken and former major league player and manager Larry Bowa as well as having a successful summer with the Mets, Morgan is headed to Boca Raton and Miami, Nov. 9-16 with the Canadian Junior National Team as it preps for the World junior championship in Cartagena, Colombia Nov. 17-27.
What the Baseball Factory had to say about Morgan, whole lists as his major league role model Carl Crawford, Andrew McCutchen and Torii Hunter:
“Gareth is a very young 2014 OF prospect with tools and projection who has already proven he can compete at a high level. He plays for the Canadian Junior National Team. Gareth has a big frame with some present strength. His plus power and plus arm lead to profile him as future right fielder.”
This summer Morgan player for the North York Blues bantams, Mets 16U, Mets 18U and the Junior National Team
In our Mizuno camp thumbnails where he was the MVP for Team Burton at the Rogers Centre he credited influences “Clyde King, who first taught him how to hit in the club house at Bond Park, Steve Davis who taught me the fundamentals of the game and Greg Hamilton who has given me some fantastic opportunities and all the guys on the JNT for showing me how much work it takes to get to the next stage.”
