DQ® 13U National Western Championship: Day 1 Report

Ottawa, ON – The first few games were played on Thursday at Baseball Canada’s third event of the summer, this one in Saskatoon, SK. Day one at the DQ® 13U National Western Championship saw four match-ups take place at Joe Zeman and Ed Bryant fields. Here’s look at some of the action:

Sask Five (SK1) 15 St. Albert (AB2) 0

Sask Five’s offense was firing on all cylinders as pitchers Kael Flynn (Saskatoon, SK) and Sam Boldt (Regina, SK) combined for four shutout innings to seal the deal. Brodie Guenther (Warman, SK) led the charge at the plate going 4-for-4 with a home run. Guenther drove in five runs and scored four times in what was a very impressive performance. Josh Clark (Martensville, SK) also contributed offensively going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.                                  

British Columbia 11 North Winnipeg (MB2) 2

Eight different players drove in runs for BC in what was a collective effort at the plate. Noah Thomas (Ladner, BC) went 3-for-4 with a home run while teammate Maguire Wakelyn (Abbotsford, BC) went 4-for-5 with three doubles. Starting pitcher Micah Buchnam (Abbotsford BC) earned the win striking out four over two hitless innings. Dylan Duguay (Lockport, MB) homered for Manitoba in the loss.

Saskatoon 9 Parkland (AB1) 8

Layton Urbanowski (Saskatoon, SK) came across to score the winning run in extra innings for Saskatoon. The walk-off win came after a three-run eighth inning for the host team. Urbanowski also earned the win on the mound as a reliever allowing four runs over 2.1 innings. Jacob Lovsin (Stony Plain, AB) went 3-for-5 with a double in the losing effort while Saskatoon’s Karter McNarland (Saskatoon, SK) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the offense.

Swift Current (SK2) 12 South Central (MB1) 4

Starting pitcher Dawson Schultz (Swift Current, SK) earned the win striking out five batters over two innings on the mound while allowing only one earned run. Schultz also contributed in the batter’s box as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Cash Arntsen (Swift Current, SK) went yard as well going 3-for-4 while driving in four. Denton Mateychuk (Dominion City, MB) doubled and walked twice while going on to steal three bases in the ball game for Manitoba.
