DQ ® 13U National Western: Sask Five and British Columbia to play for gold

Ottawa, ON - Both semifinals and two placement games were held in Saskatoon, SK on Saturday at the DQ ® 13U National Western. The gold medal game is now set as Sask Five and British Columbia both came out on top in their contests. Here is a look at some of the action:

North Winnipeg (MB2) 7 Parkland (AB1) 3

North Winnipeg clinched fifth place in the tournament thanks to a strong performance on the mound from starting pitcher Brett Zeller (St. Andrews, MB). Zeller went the distance striking out five in not giving up a single earned run in the game. Dylan Duguay (Lockport, MB) went yard for the third time in the tournament going 4-for-4 and coming across to score three times. Bennet Freiter (St. Andrews, MB) also went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs.

St. Albert (AB2) 11 Swift Current (SK2) 6

St. Albert will finish the weekend sitting in the seventh spot after the win. Curtis Anderson (Sherwood Park, AB) and Maxamillian Hartman (St. Albert, AB) both homered for St. Albert. Hartman drove in three runs to lead the offense. Swift Current’s Ethan Murdoch (Swift Current, SK) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and came across to score three times in the loss. Starting pitcher Logan Kowaluk (St. Albert, AB) earned the win holding the opposition to two runs over two innings.

Saskatoon 1 Sask Five (SK1) 7

Sask Five earned a spot in the final thanks to a collective effort at the plate and sound defensive play on the diamond. Reliever Brodie Guenther (Warman, SK) picked up the win after striking out five over 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball. Guenther also drove in two runs to help his cause. Nolan Lindberg (Dalmeny, SK) provided the bulk of the offensive production going 1-for-3 while driving in three runs and scoring once. Saskatoon will play for bronze on Sunday.

British Columbia South Central (MB1)

Starting pitcher Noah Thomas (Ladner, BC) was perfect over 2.1 innings on the mound while striking out two to earn the win for British Columbia and send his team to the gold medal game. Treyson Smith (Abbotsford, BC) was unstoppable in the batter’s box going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. Smith drove in six runs and came across to score twice in the clutch performance. South Central will face Saskatoon for bronze tomorrow.
