Blue Jays from Away
The Blue Jays’ affiliates had a strong day on Friday, winning six of their eight contests and getting a couple of come-from-behind victories.
Buffalo Bisons 2, Rochester Red Wings 4
The day after losing 6-3 to Rochester, the Bisons had their score doubled yet again, losing 4-2 on Friday. Casey Lawrence had an excellent outing wasted after going 7 1/3 innings with just one run and five hits against, walking just two and striking out five. Aaron Loup threw an inning of perfect ball, striking out all three batters he faced while Bo Schultz took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits (including a home run) and a walk in 1 1/3 innings.
Melky Mesa had two hits including a double and a run while Jesus Montero was 2/5.
Player of the Game: Casey Lawrence
Roster Notes: The Blue Jays recalled Ryan Goins and optioned Darrell Ceciliani back to Buffalo, also sending Junior Lake outright to the Bisons.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 12, Altoona Curve 2
Opening up a series against the Altoona Curve (featuring old friend Trey Wilson on their broadcast team), the New Hampshire Fisher Cats held nothing back in a 12-2 victory. Shane Dawson had an excellent start, giving up only one run on three hits and two walks over six innings to earn his ninth victory, adding six strikeouts. Wil Browning pitched a scoreless seventh, walking one and striking out the side and Alonzo Gonzalez walked four over two innings, giving up one run but didn’t allow a hit and struck out three.
Jorge Saez has been swinging a hot bat and he blasted his sixth home run with the Fisher Cats, going 2/4 with a walk and two runs. Ryan Lavarnway also went deep, going 2/4 with a walk and two RBI. Richard Urena (3/5, 2 RBI, 3 R), Roemon Fields (3/5, R, RBI, CS) and Jon Berti (3/5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB) had three hits for the ‘Cats while Christian Lopes (2/6, 2B, 2 R) had two hits.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Lakeland Flying Tigers 6
Dunedin lost its fourth straight game but are still a game up on the Daytona Tortugas for first place in the Florida State League North second half standings. The D-Jays opened their series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers with a 6-5 loss, despite a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth that didn’t quite get the job done. Ryan McBroom has been red hot since his return from New Hampshire and rapped out three hits including a double, took a walk and drove in three runs. David Harris was 3/4 with a double, an RBI and a run (but was also picked off and caught stealing) while Jonathan Davis was 2/4 with a double, a walk and two runs. Max Pentecost was promoted from Lansing after coming off the DL and went 1/5.
Brad Allen got the start and held the Flying Tigers to three runs on seven hits and four walks with one strikeout over 5 1/3 innings. Francisco Rios gave up a run in 1 2/3 innings on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts while Adonys Cardona surrendered what was ultimately the winning run, giving up two on three hits in the eighth while striking out two.

Roster Notes: Max Pentecost was promoted to Dunedin after coming off the DL and Josh Almonte went on the disabled list.
Lansing Lugnuts 5, South Bend Cubs 2
Without having to face their rivals, the Great Lakes Loons, the Lugnuts got back on the winning trail, beating the South Bend Cubs 5-2. Justin Atkinson’s batting average is creeping towards the Mendoza Line after a 2/4 game that had him hitting a double and a triple with two RBI and a run. John La Prise (2/3, R, CS) and Juan Kelly (2/3, 2B, BB) also had two hits each in the win while Andrew Guillotte was 1/3 with a walk and a run.
Jordan Romano had a very good game for the Lugnuts, throwing 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Daniel Lietz gave up two hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings but didn’t allow a run of his own (after letting the runner he inherited from Romano score) and struck out two. Daniel Young finished the eighth and vultured the win and Andrew Case struck out two in the ninth to pick up his seventh save.

Roster Notes: Max Pentecost was promoted to Dunedin.
Vancouver Canadians 6, Spokane Indians 3
The Canadians won their second game against the Spokane Indians, this time by a 6-3 score. The terrific trio of Mike Ellenbest (3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K), Andy Ravel (W, 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 K) and Griffin Glaude (S, 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) combined to limit the Indians to three runs.
Another trio of Canadians had two hits each with Yeltsin Gudino (2/4, R), Joshua Palacios (2/4, 2B, R) and Bryan Lizardo (2/4, 2 RBI, R) getting the job done for the Cs. Christian Williams had a double and an RBI while J.B. Woodman and Jacob Anderson drove in a run each.

Bluefield Blue Jays 7, Pulaski Yankees 6
The “Comeback Kids” of Bluefield took their second game in a row from the Pulaski Yankees in dramatic fashion, scoring six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come from behind and win 7-6. Cam O’Brien hit his fourth home run of the year, going 1/3 with two RBI, a walk and a run while Levi Scott (2/5, 2 RBI) and Earl Burl III (2/4) had two hits apiece. Nick Sinay stole his 26th base of the year, scoring twice and going 1/3 with a walk. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. was 1/5 with an RBI.
Joel Espinal went five innings but walked five and gave up five hits to surrender three runs. Christian Cox went two more innings, giving up a run on a solo home run (among two hits) and Chris Hall earned both a blown save and a win with two innings, giving up two unearned runs with one strikeout.
Player of the Game: Cam O’Brien
GCL Blue Jays 9, GCL Pirates 7
Also the engineers of a comeback, the GCL Blue Jays overcame making six errors to beat the Pirates 9-7 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh and currently sit in first place (by a game) in the Gulf Coast League Northwest division. Jose Nova started for the Blue Jays and went 2 2/3 innings, giving up a run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Newly signed Ty Sterner, a 23-year-old lefty who was released this year by the Reds organization, went out and threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three. Randy Pondler blew a save but picked up his fifth win of the year, allowing four unearned runs on six hits and no walks in four innings, striking out two.
Antony Fuentes had two hits, driving in two, scoring a run and stealing a base while Norberto Obeso was on base three times with a single and two walks, scoring twice. Francisco Rodriguez scored three times, going 1/3 iwth a double, a walk and an RBI and D.J. Daniels had two RBI, going 1/4.

Roster Notes: Ty Sterner was added to the GCL Blue Jays roster.
DSL Blue Jays 6, DSL Orioles1 2
The DSL Blue Jays had an excellent overall game, beating the DSL Orioles1 by a 6-2 score. Mc Gregory Contreras had the most hits, going 3/4 with two RBI and two runs while Jonelvy Molina (2/4, R), Antonio Concepcion (2/4, 2B, RBI) and Luis De Los Santos (2/4, 2B, R) had two hits each.
Luis Mendoza went six innings, giving up just two runs on three hits (including a home run) and a walk with four strikeouts. Jose Dominguez was dominant through the final three innings, allowing only a hit with three strikeouts.
