Blue Jays from Away

Thursday was a mixed day for the Blue Jays’ minor leaguers with a .500 record over the six games, despite a monstrous performance from Bradley Jones for the Bluefield Blue Jays.

 
Buffalo Bisons 4, Gwinnett Braves 6
The Bisons struck first against the Gwinnett Braves but the Braves took control by scoring six unanswered runs on their way to a 6-4 victory over Buffalo. Andy Burns was 3/3 with a walk and a run for the Bisons and Matt Dominguez was 2/4 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Dalton Pompey was on base twice with a walk and a single, driving in a run and scoring one while Darrell Ceciliani was 1/5 with a double and an RBI.

Scott Copeland was charged with all six runs, going five innings and allowing three walks and nine hits with four strikeouts. Bo Schultz threw two scoreless innings, walking one and Matt Dermody walked one and gave up a hit with one strikeout in the eighth.

Roster Notes: Ryan Goins was optioned to Buffalo to make room for Jose Bautista on the big club.

 
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Reading Fightin Phils 6
The Fisher Cats opened their series with the Reading Fightin Phils unable to get their bats going, losing 6-1. With just five hits, the club got their only run on a sacrifice fly from Richard Urena who drove home Derrick Loveless.

Wilmer Font allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over five innings, taking the loss. John Stilson gave up the other three runs over two innings, allowing four hits and a walk with a strikeout. Chris Smith struck out the side in the eighth around a walk.

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Tampa Yankees 2
The game was rough, as the two clubs combined to commit seven errors but the Dunedin Blue Jays got six runs to the Yankees’ two, picking up the win. Michael De La Cruz was 3/4 with a triple and three runs while Dickie Joe Thon and Max Pentecost each had a double and an RBI but overall, the offensive output for the Blue Jays was disappointing with the club going down on strikes 17 times in the game.

Jon Harris allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts while Tim Mayza allowed an unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Dusty Isaacs finished the game by facing one batter and retiring him.

Lansing Lugnuts 7, Dayton Dragons 2
After getting knocked out after one inning in his last start, Angel Perdomo was much stronger on Thursday, pitching the Lansing Lugnuts to a 7-2 win over the Dayton Dragons. Perdomo went six innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Tom Robson walked four in 2 2/3 innings but gave up just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts. Andrew Case was called upon to come in with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth and he struck out the only batter he faced.

Andrew Guillotte was 2/5 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs while Jake Thomas was on base twice with a single and a walk, scoring twice. Connor Panas was also on base twice, hitting a single, a sacrifice fly, taking a walk and driving in a pair.

Bluefield Blue Jays 12, Pulaski Yankees 5
Bluefield had another big offensive day, getting four home runs, including three off the bat of Bradley Jones who took over the Appalachian League lead in home runs with 15. Jones was 4/4, adding a double and walk to his monster game, putting up 14 total bases in the game with five RBI and three runs. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. was all over the Yankees’ pitching too, going 3/5 and missing the cycle by a home run. Cam O’Brien hit his fifth home run of hte year and was 2/3 with a double, a walk, three RBI and three runs.

Yennsy Diaz started for the Blue Jays, giving up just one hit (and four walks) in five innings and allowing a run with five strikeouts. Stuart Holmes threw two perfect innings, striking out three while Hunter Barnett gave up three runs over 2/3 of an inning and Christian Cox allowed one of the three inherited runners from Barnett to score while also giving up a run himself in 1 1/3 innings.

Roster Notes: The Blue Jays signed independent league pitcher Eric Veglahn and assigned him to Bluefield.


GCL Blue Jays 2, GCL Phillies 7
Completing their home-and-home series against the GCL Phillies at home, the GCL Blue Jays lost again, falling further behind the Phillies in the race for first place in the GCL Northwest Division. The Blue Jays now have an elimination number of four (any combination of Blue Jays losses and Phillies wins will eliminate the Blue Jays from playoff contention) despite the fact that their 37-15 record is the second best (by far) in the whole league. The Blue Jays’ offense was quiet, getting just five hits including two from Kevin Vicuna. Chavez Young hit a double and Francisco Rodriguez and Ryan Gold each drove in a run.

Tyler Olander threw two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out one. Dany Jimenez took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over two innings with two strikeouts while Randy Pondler struck out four in 3 2/3 innings but allowed two runs on four hits and three walks. Richard Reina gave up two more runs in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.
