Blue Jays from Away

Over the course of six games on Wednesday, the Blue Jays’ minor leaguers won four of them, seeing some strong prospect performances along the way.

Buffalo Bisons 6, Durham Bulls 4
With righty Roberto Hernandez on the mound, the Bisons got out to a 6-0 lead and held on to beat the Durham Bulls 6-4. Hernandez had a strong outing, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Pat Venditte allowed allowed in inherited run to score as well as one of his own, giving up a run on a solo home run and two walks in his 2/3 of an inning return to Buffalo. Ryan Tepera finished the game with two innings of hitless ball, walking two and striking out four.

Jesus Montero and Alexi Casilla led the offense with Montero goin 2/4 with two RBI and Casilla going 2/4 with a triple and two runs. Junior Lake was 1/3 with a walk and a run while Tony Sanchez was 1/3 with a walk, a run and an RBI.

Roster Notes: Chad Girodo and Andy Burns were recalled by the Toronto Blue Jays. Luis Hurtado was assigned to the Bisons.


New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9, Altoona Curve 3
The Fisher Cats turned the tables on the Altoona Curve, bringing the lumber and beating the Curve 9-3, a day after getting beaten badly themselves. Five Fisher Cats had multi-hit games including Ryan Lavarnway who was 3/4 with a run, Matt Dean (2/4, 2B, RBI), Dwight Smith, Jr. (2/4, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI), Melky Mesa (2/5, 2B, 3 RBI) and Roemon Fields (2/5, 2B, 2 R, OF Asst.)

Jason Berken got the start for the Fisher Cats and had a much better start than his last outing on Friday, allowing only two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Matt Dermody went 1 1/3 innings of perfect ball, striking out two of the four batters he faced while Murphy Smith saw his ERA bump above the 1.00 mark after allowing a run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Roster Notes: Seth Conner was assigned to the Fisher Cats.


Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Charlotte Stone Crabs 4
Dunedin was defeated by the Charlotte Stone Crabs, mainly because they were unable to get the bats going, getting stymied with just two runs on seven hits in the 4-2 loss. Starting pitcher Francisco Rios was excellent, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, striking out six. Adonys Cardona allowed a run in his inning, giving up two hits and striking out one. Conor Fisk also allowed a run over two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Seven different players had hits and four of them walked (Jonathan Davis, Aaron Attaway, Ryan McBroom and Emilio Guerrero. Gunnar Heidt hit a solo home run in the seventh inning as his only hit of the game.

Lansing Lugnuts 10, Great Lakes Loons 1
The Lugnuts opened their double header against the Great Lakes Loons with a resounding win on the backs of a fantastic pitching performance from Ryan Borucki and a patient day from the hitters. Borucki won his third game, giving up just one run on three hits over six innings and striking out nine batters without walking any. Danny Young followed with a perfect inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The offense scored 10 times on just eight hits but also took eight walks. J.C. Cardenas had the big day, hitting a three-run home run and adding two walks. Jake Thomas was on base twice, going 2/5 with two RBI and a run while second baseman John La Prise was 1/3 with a walk, a double and two RBI. Josh Almonte had two singles, an RBI and two runs.

Roster Notes: Patrick Murphy was activated from the temporarily inactive list and Austin Davis was added to the 7-day DL.


Lansing Lugnuts 3, Great Lakes Loons 6
The Lugnuts couldn’t make it a sweep, getting only two hits in Game 2 although shortstop J.C. Cardenas, a sixth-round pick in 2015, seems to finally be finding his way at the plate. Cardenas hit his second home run of the day, driving in three and in total seven over the two games of the double header.

Patrick Murphy only managed to last four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits (including a home run) and three walks with three strikeouts. Ryan Cook was solid in relief, giving up a hit and a walk with a strike out over two innings and Dusty Isaacs gave up two hits, leading to two unearned runs in the seventh.

Player of the Game: J.C. Cardenas

 
DSL Blue Jays 11, DSL White Sox 5
The DSL Blue Jays got their offensive mojo back, beating up on the White Sox in an 11-5 victory. Yorman Rodriguez was the star, driving in five runs himself and going 3/6 with a single, double and a triple and adding a stolen base. Jesus Navarro was 3/5 with a walk, an RBI and a run and Victor Figuereo was 2/5 with a triple, a walk, an RBI and a run. Sam Buelens scored four times but was only 1/4 with a walk and a stolen base.

Maximo Castillo had a solid outing, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings. Tommy Henriquez got the win, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk in three innings, also striking out five. Nicolas Cabarcas couldn’t get anyone out, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned) while Jesus Colman allowed an unearned run on no hits and no walks, stranding the two runners left on by Cabarcas and striking out two over two innings.
