BMOC: Bauml, Shaw, Panas, Lillis-White
After a weekend off the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds were back at it, and with that came some big performances from Canadians. Here is a recap of the top Canadian performances from around the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA from this past week.
Lillis-White pitches Thunderbirds to game 1 victory:
Coming off a 2014 season that saw him go 9-0 with a 0.46 ERA Conor Lillis-White (Toronto, Ont.) helped his UBC team to a 2-1 series opening victory over Concordia this past weekend. Concordia hitters had little chance in this one as Lillis-White threw seven innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run. To add to those impressive totals, he also fanned nine Cavaliers hitters over just 92 pitches. It is not hard to see how he finished 9-0 last season. The Thunderbirds are now 17-6 and are winners of eight of their last nine.
Tough luck loss, Canadians bright on the bump:
UBC starter Jeremy Newton (Toronto, Ont.) took the loss in Game 2 of the three game set with Concordia. A first inning run was all it took as the Cavs would shut out the Thunderbirds the rest of the way en route to a 1-0 win. Newton scattered three hits over five innings for the T-Birds, allowing just the first inning run while striking out three and walking two.
Gillies shuts down Cavs:
Tyler Gillies (London, Ont.) was handed the job of keeping his team in the 1-0 game two loss and he did just that. Gillies threw three shutout [tyler Gillies] innings to close out the loss. He did not allow a hit and struck out two. Unfortunately it was not enough as UBC could not push across a run.
Lets not forget about the hitters:
“A much better day swinging the bats” is the way UBC coach Terry McKaig put it. Game three and the final game of the UBC/Concordia series saw the Thunderbird bats come alive. Jerod Bartnik(Surrey, BC) helped lead the way offensively in game three going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. He was backed byBrendan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) who went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored. UBC opens NAIA West conference play this weekend with a four game set at Simpson University.
Late rally hands Kellogg no decision:
LHP Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, Ont.) makes another stop in this weeks addition of the BMOC’s. Kellogg could have earned a better fate as he pitched into the eighth inning for the third consecutive start against the Long Beach State University Dirtbags. A late rally by LBSU would spoil his 20th career quality start with a three-run home run in the top of the eighth to take their first lead of the game. LBSU would not look back and would go on to win 4-2. Kellogg struck out a season high eight Dirtbag hitters, was responsible for two runs, allowing five hits an walking just two. He would be taken out in the eighth after surrendering singles to the first two hitters he faced in the inning. It was Kellogg’s first no decision of the season. Arizona State was ranked #17 in the NCAA.
Shaw leads Sooners to win:
[chris shaw] It was the bats of Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, Man.) and the Sooners that helped Oklahoma to a 7-1 win over visiting Purdue Boiler Makers on the weekend. Shaw went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the win. Oh yeah, the hit? A second inning home run that extended the Sooner lead to 4-0. The Midland College transfer is the first player from Manitoba to play in the Big 12 Conference.
Degano dealing for Sycamores:
Redshirt Junior LHP Jeff Degano (Surrey, BC) was at it again for his Indiana State Sycamores. This time it was the Youngstown State Penguins who could not solve the B.C native. Degano earned the win, improving his record to 3-1 on the year. He would throw six innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out 10. It was his third quality start of the season. The 10 punch outs is the first time a Sycamore has had double digit Ks since April 2014. Degano continues to put himself on the map for the upcoming 2015 MLB Draft.
Bauml’s bat tough on Wildcat pitching:
Cole Bauml (Muenster, Sask.) had a solid weekend for the Northern Kentucky Norse going 3-for-4 as they took on in-state rival the Kentucky Wildcats. After Kentucky took a 2-0 lead early in game one, Bauml’s second home run of the season cut the Wildcat lead in half. Baum followed that up with a two-out single in the sixth, he then would swipe second base. Bauml then would score his third run of the game, being hit by a pitch in the eighth, stealing second, adding to his season total of six and scoring on a single. NKU would make the game interesting when Bauml hit his 14th double of the season and brought home another run for the Norse but UK would hold on for a 7-6 win. Bauml finished the game with two RBIs and three runs scored. Bauml would add his third home run of the season in the night cap and would stretch his hitting streak to 23 games dating back to last season. Northern Kentucky is 2-11 on the season despite Bauml’s solid play.
Antchak helps NEO sink Southwestern CC
It was another highlight weekend for Brad Antchak (North Delta, BC) as his Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Golden Norseman took three [Antchak-Brad] of four from the Southwestern Community College Spartans. Game 1 ended in an 11-1 NEO win in which Antchak went 3-for-4 with double, a run scored and a stolen base. He followed that performance with a 2-for-3 day in game two that included another double, a triple, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. He then had a walk in the only loss of the series for NEO. It was back to the win column in Game 4 and Antchak aided the 14 run barrage with yet another double, an RBI and a run scored. Antchak, through 11 games is hitting .308 with a home run, 16 RBIs, 13 runs scored and four stolen bases.
Griffs sliding, but Canadians rising:
Three Ontario boys did their best to help halt the Canisius Golden Griffins losing streak over the weekend against the James Madison Dukes, but it was not enough as they dropped all four games. Brett Siddall (Windsor, Ont.) had a 4-for-5 day for the Griffs, including a ninth inning two-run home run to bring his team within a pair of runs of tying the game. Connor Panas (Toronto, Ont.) had a pair of hits including a two-run home run and senior Mike Kirsch(Langley, BC) had a pair of RBIs.
Terriers Round up:
[cole pergine] Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ont.) had three hits to help his Stony Brook Seawolves to a 6-1 win in Game 1 of a double-header over the Fordham Rams.

Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) was also 4-for-5 with his third home run of the season to go along with tqo RBIs and two runs scored as No. 3-ranked Virginia defeated the Pittsburgh Pantherss. [daniel pinero]
Jake Robson (Windsor, Ont.) is currently 4th in the NCAA in walks, 10th in stolen bases, 14th in runs and 21st in OBP.
Toronto Mets Round up:
J.D. Osborne (Whitby, Ont.) went 2-for-5, with a double and triple in a 11-9 win over St. Petersburg College. Osborne also had an RBI and a pair of runs scored in the game.
Jordan Giller (Toronto, Ont.) had an RBI as the Oswego State Lakers won their first two games of the season over ranked Rowan University.
Zack Pop (Brampton, Ont.) made his third appearances of the season for the University of Kentucky in their series against Northern Kentucky this past weekend. He had a scoreless outing pitching 1/3 of an inning.
2-6-2
And in case you missed it C J.P. Rousseau (Blainville, Que.) was in the midst of the action as the New Mexico Thunderbirds turned a strike-em out, throw-em out, throw-em out triple play.
