When George Bell reported to the rookie-class Helena Phillies as an 18-year-old in 1978 he took one look around Montana.

And he noticed, most people drove a pick-up truck, many had gun racks and plenty wore cowboy hats.

And fans that came to the game noticed that Bell could hit (.311 with six doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs in 33 games).

LF Malik Collymore (Mississauga, Ont.) likely had similar thoughts when he was traded from rookie-class Johnson City by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Milwaukee Brewers and assigned to the Helena Brewers. The Brewers traded RHP Jonathan Broxton and cash to St. Louis for Collymore at the non-waiver July 31 trade deadline.

All Collymore did in his first week in Montana was earn Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week honors, as the best of the Canucks not in the majors. He had the most hits of any of the 89 Canadians in affiliated ball.

How the week that was went for Collymore, the Ontario Blue Jays grad, as he

_ Played left field and batting second, he went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in an 8-5 loss to the Idaho Falls Chukars before 1,420 fans at Kindrick Legion Field in Helena, Mt.

_ Was 2-for-5 in an 8-7, 10-inning loss to Idaho Falls in front of 1,021 fans.

_ Hitting lead-off he was 3-for-6 with a double in a 9-8 defeat to Idaho Falls before 606 fans.

_ Batting lead-off he was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a walk in a 10-8 win against Idaho Falls in front of 423 fans.

_ Singled in three trips in a 6-2 loss to the Ogden Raptors in front of 750 fans.

_ Batting lead off he was hitless in three trips with a walk in a 9-0 loss to Ogden in front of 995.

Collymore, 20, a 10th round selection in the 2013 draft is hitting .367 at Helena with an .891 OPS through seven games. This season he is hitting .260 with five doubles, two triples, two homers, 10 RBIs and a .757 OPS.
