Blue Jays from Away

Typical of the Blue Jays’ affiliates’ fortunes of late, the clubs had a combined record of 2-6 on a day when prospects Conner Greene, Sean Reid-Foley and Angel Perdomo all started.

Buffalo Bisons 4, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 7
Jeff Francis got the start for the Bisons and allowed six runs (four earned) over four innings to take the loss. Greg Burke allowed an unearned run but no hits over 2 2/3 innings, striking out four and Colt Hynes gave up just one hit over the final inning and a third.

Alex Hassan was 3/5 with an RBI while Matt Hague, making his return to Buffalo was 2/4 with a walk and two RBI. Jon Berti also collected two hits and Dalton Pompey was 1/3 with two walks and two runs.

Roster Notes: Sean Ochinko was promoted back to Buffalo after a brief stint in New Hampshire. Jorge Saez was sent back to the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Player of the Game: Hague and Hassan

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 8, Portland Sea Dogs 4
Conner Greene was excellent, pitching the first five innings for the Fisher Cats and shutting out the Sea Dogs and allowing just one hit and striking out four. He fell apart in the sixth inning, hitting a batter and giving up a double and a single before getting a ground out and giving up another single and walking his final batter. With his pitch count at 75, Greene came out for John Anderson who, while he allowed one of Greene’s inherited runners to score, went on to throw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball while Greg Infante struck out four over two scoreless innings.

The offense made the good pitching less necessary. Melky Mesa was 3/5 with an RBI and two runs while Dwight Smith, Jr. had two doubles and a walk, going 2/4 with three runs scored. Roemon Fields stole two bases and scored twice despite going 0/4 and Emilio Guerrero was 2/3 with a walk and an RBI.

Roster Notes: Sean Ochinko was sent back to Buffalo and Martin Medina was activated off the DL.

Player of the Game: Smith and Mesa

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Tampa Yankees 3
The Blue Jays lost a walk-off game 3-2 to the Tampa Yankees in 10 innings. Derek Blacksher had a much better start for the D-Jays this time out, going six scoreless innings and giving up eight hits with five strikeouts before the bullpen gave up the game. Lendy Castillo brought his ERA down to 12.00 by allowing two runs in two innings on four hits and Matt Dermody took the loss after allowing a run in the 10th inning.

The Blue Jays had seven hits from seven different players including doubles from Derrick Loveless (1/3, BB, 2B, 2 SB, OF Assist) and Jason Leblebijian and a home run from Andy Fermin which accounted for both Dunedin runs.

Roster Notes: Jorge Saez was sent back to Dunedin from Buffalo.

Player of the Game: Loveless and Blacksher

Lansing Lugnuts 2, Fort Wayne TinCaps 3
In a game that featured a lot of pitchers who had trouble throwing quality strikes, the Lugnuts fell 3-2 to Fort Wayne. The Lugnuts got four innings from Sean Reid-Foley who, by my count, threw 83 pitches with seven strikeouts and two walks but also had the ball hit hard against him and gave up two runs on five hits. Mark Biggs struggled to find the zone, giving up a run over two innings while Jose Fernandez had the easiest time of the pitchers, throwing two scoreless innings.

The batters almost came back in this one. D.J. Davis drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the fourth and David Harris cashed a run in the ninth. It could have been more but Chris Carlson was thrown out at the plate, coming home on D.J. Davis’s ground ball.

Roster Notes: IF Lane Thomas was placed on the 7-day DL.

Player of the Game: None

Vancouver Canadians 3, Boise Hawks 5
Despite nine hits, the Canadians allowed five runs and only scored three of their own, losing to Boise on Monday. Angel Perdomo recovered from a rough first inning in which he walked three batters and gave up a run on a sacrifice fly to finish his four-inning outing with just that one run on one hit and four walks with five strikeouts. Sean Ratcliffe allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk in two innings while Turner Lee took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) over just one-third of an inning. Michael Kraft and Daniel Young each pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Andrew Guillotte was 2/4 with two stolen bases and two runs while Justin Atkinson was 2/5 with an RBI and Gunnar Heidt was 2/4 with a double. Juan Kelly walked twice.

Player of the Game: Guillotte, Heidt and Perdomo

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Pulaski Yankees 12
Luis Sanchez was lit up by the Pulaski Yankees, throwing only one inning and allowing five runs on the way to a 12-3 pulverizing. Zak Wasilewski allowed another three runs over three innings and John Kravetz gave up three runs (all unearned) over three innings. Alberto Guzman walked two and allowed a run in one inning.

The batters had eight hits including a two (a single and a double) from D.J. McKnight who drove in a run and two (both singles) from Deiferson Barreto. Matt Morgan was 1/2 with a walk, two RBI and a caught stealing before coming out of the game.

Player of the Game: McKnight and Barreto

GCL Blue Jays 1, GCL Pirates 0
Justin Maese continues to be outstanding for the GCL Blue Jays who squeaked to a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Maese went five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and a walk with one strikeout. Nate Abel allowed three hits and struck out five, throwing 3 2/3 innings while Mike Estevez retired the final batter of the game for the save. Nash Knight had one of the club’s four hits, drawing a walk and hitting a double while Bryan Lizardo was 1/3 with a double and the game’s only RBI.

Player of the Game: Maese and Abel

DSL Blue Jays 1, DSL Astros 3
The DSL Blue Jays didn’t get much offense as they dropped a game to the DSL Astros in the first game of Semi Final B. Francisco Rodriguez had three of the Blue Jays’ seven hits, scoring once and Cristian Peguero was 2/3. Joel Espinal allowed all three runs, throwing 4 1/3 innings and Yonardo Herdenez allowed five hits but no runs over 2 1/3 innings. Orlando Pascual didn’t allow a hit over the final 2 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays.

Player of the Game: Rodriguez
