Cal Quantrill has not thrown a pitch since Feb. 27 against the Rice Owls.
And the right-hander is not scheduled to start in the season opening series which begins Feb. 19 against the Cal State Fullerton Titans.
Despite having Tommy John surgery on March 20, Quantrill is projected to be the top Canuck selected this June. He’s No. 1 on our annual Canadian Baseball Network draft list.
And Perfect Game Scouting Service has Quantrill ranked 15th on the top 100 college juniors this spring, one of three Canucks to make the list. The others are SS Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) of the Virginia Cavaliers and OF Jacob Robson (Windsor, Ont.) of the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Quantrill was 2-0 in his three starts with a 1.93 ERA. He walked eight and fanned 20 in 18 2/3 innings. The Ontario Terriers grad started against the Indiana Hooisers and then had wins over Cal State Fullerton and Rice.
Pinero, an Ontario Blue Jays grad, batted .308 with eight doubles, a triple, six homers and 29 RBIs in 67 games as he went 9-for-11 stealing bases with an ,828 OPS.
Robson, who played for the Windsor Selects and the Ontario Blue Jays batted .324 with five doubles, a homer and nine RBIs. He also went 21-for-27 and owned a 4.804 OPS. Playing in 54 games and making 50 starts he scored 41 times and had 60 hits.
