On Saturday, the Buffalo Bisons and New Hampshire Fisher Cats both earned one-run victories while the Dunedin Blue Jays and Lansing Lugnuts had their winning streaks snapped.
Buffalo Bisons 2, Syracuse Chiefs 1
In dramatic style, the Bisons got an RBI ground out from Junior Lake in the sixth inning which served to be the winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs. Matt Dominguez started the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth inning while David Adams was 2/2 with a walk and Tony Sanchez hit a double. Dalton Pompey returned to the lineup and was 0/4 with a strikeout.
The real star for the Bisons on Saturday was starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc. “Gandalf” LeBlanc threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only six hits and two walks with six strikeouts to pick up his third win of the year. Chad Jenkins threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and an unearned run while Colt Hynes took the save by getting the final out of the game with two of Jenkins’s runners on.
Player of the Game: Wade LeBlanc
Roster Notes: IF Shane Opitz was promoted to Buffalo while Bobby Korecky was placed on the DL.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Hartford Yard Goats 6
Speaking of dramatic victories, the Fisher Cats charged back with three runs in the eighth to tie and one in the ninth to go ahead of the Hartford Yard Goats in a 7-6 win. Roemon Fields led the offense, going 4/4 with a triple and a walk, stealing his 10th base of the season while Matt Dean (2/5, RBI, R), Christian Lopes (2/5, 2 R, RBI), Ian Parmley (2/4. 3B, BB, RBI, R) and Jorge Flores (2/4, RBI, R) each had two hits. Jon Berti stole his team-leading 14th base and was 1/4 with an RBI.
John Anderson allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings and Brady Dragmire gave up an inherited runner from Anderson and allowed one of his own on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Murphy Smith moved his record to 3-0 with two innings of two-hit, four-strikeout ball, shutting the Yard Goats down.
Player of the Game: Roemon Fields
Roster Notes: Shane Opitz was promoted to the Buffalo Bisons.
Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Daytona Tortugas 8
The Daytona Tortugas got some revenge on Dunedin, cruising after a six-run third inning for an eight-run lead that eventually became an 8-2 victory. Ryan Borucki continues to get hit hard, as he gave up three home runs to the Tortugas as part of a line that reads two-plus innings (including seven batters without retiring anyone in the third), seven hits, eight runs (seven earned), three walks and four strikeouts. Alonzo Gonzalez allowed two of his three inherited runners from Borucki to score but otherwise only allowed three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings. Chris Rowley provided another three innings of one-hit, one-walk ball, striking out four and Matt Dermody finished the game with a perfect ninth.
The Blue Jays’ batters scored just two runs despite getting eight hits and walking four times. Jason Leblebijian and Dickie Joe Thon were both 2/4 with a single, a double and an RBI while both Richard Urena and Jonathan Davis were 1/2 with two walks.
Player of the Game: Jason Leblebijian, Dickie Joe Thon and Chris Rowley
Roster Notes: Colton Turner was promoted to Dunedin from Lansing and Michael Bourn was released.
Lansing Lugnuts 2, Quad Cities River Bandits 6
After not scoring against the Lugnuts for two consecutive games, the Quad Cities River Bandits got four runs in the first inning off Angel Perdomo and held that lead, finishing with a 6-2 win. Perdomo didn’t get out of the first, throwing 34 pitches and giving up four runs (two earned) on just one hit and three walks with one strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. Daniel Lietz did a solid job, throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief with three hits and two walks, striking out one but he did allow the two inherited runners from Perdomo to score. Starlyn Suriel threw another 3 1/3 innings with two hits, one run and two walks against while Dusty Isaacs continued to pitch well, allowing an unearned on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.
The Lugnuts had six hits, including four doubles with Aaron Attaway, Lane Thomas, Jacob Anderson and Austin Davis hitting the deuce. Thomas and Davis each took a walk. Ryan Hissey had two hits and an RBI.
