Padres have interest in Quantrill, soon to be rich man

By Bob Elliott

Cal Quantrill will be the top Canadian selected June 8.

Everyone says so.

Quantrill still has not thrown a pitch for the Stanford Cardinal. He underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow March 20, 2015 and was on a 14-month recovery plan which brings up to about now.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill hasn’t thrown a pitch in a game for the Stanford University Cardinal this spring.

Yet his stock continues to rise.

He is expected to go in the first round when the draft goes June 9-11.

He threw a private bullpen session for the San Diego Padres who own three of the first 25 selections at eighth, 24th and 25th. Slot money for the eighth pick is $3,630,900 US, 24th $2,191,200 and 25th $2,159,900.

Quantrill is listed 20th on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 combined list of collegians and high schoolers, 25th Perfect Game’s top 500 combined list and 38th on Baseball America’s top 500.

The New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher selected Quantrill in the 26th round three years ago.

With their prized prospect coming off Tommy John injury it didn’t stop the Washington Nationals from choosing right-hander Lucas Giolito 16th over-all in the first round of the 2012 draft.

Surgery didn’t hinder the Toronto Blue Jays from selecting right-hander Jeff Hoffman from East Carolina State ninth over-all in 2014.

And it didn’t half the Nationals from taking the Nationals choosing right-hander Erick Fedde 18th over-all in 2014.

So, it should not be a hindrance for Quantrill.

We have the top 15 Canadians with detailed reports into heading into the three-day draft June 8-to-11.
