With extra picks is Quantrill a Padre?

For Cal Quantrill the draft is less than a week away.

So until Thursday night it is mock, mock, mock around the clock as Bill Haley and the Comets used to sing “Rock Around the Clock.” 

Depending upon where you look Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) the former Ontario Terriers standout who has not thrown a pitch this spring for the Stanford Cardinal should his name selected Thursday nights when the Major League Baseball executives gather for the draft show televised on MLB Network in Secaucus, N.J. 

Quantrill could go as high as eighth over-all to the San Diego Padres, according to Baseball America, 21st to Your Toronto Blue Jays, according to Jim Callis’ MLB Pipeline, 23rd to the St. Louis Cardinals according to ESPN’s Keith Law or 24th as Perfect Game Scouting Service USA predicts. Quantrill has thrown a private bullpen session for Padres scouts, among others.

Any way you slice it no matter where Quantrill lands he’ll be taking in beaucoup de cash: the assigned slot value for being selected eighth over all is $3,630,900 US and $2,191,200 for 24th. First rounders often sign pre-draft deals to allow clubs to save money on one pick so it can be spend elsewhere on drafted players. 

Quantrill is one of nine Canucks ranked in the top 500 prospects ranked by either Perfect Game or Baseball America, or MLB Pipeline’s top 200.
