Big things come from Biggar, Sask.

Like 6-foot-5 RHP Garrett Hawkins.

You’ve heard the story how the sign entering the town of 2,165 (2016 census) reads:

“New York is big ... but this is Biggar.”

Hawkins, a former Vauxhall Jet and University of British Columbia Thunderbird, certainly was big, celebrating Canada Day in fine fashion. He and Alan Mundo combined on a July 1 no hitter. Hawkins wasn’t on our annual 22nd annual Canada Day lineup, but who knows if he keeps this up.

For his brilliant seven-inning outing, the Big Man was selected as Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Week for Week XIII.

Hawkins, a ninth-round pick by San Diego Padres scout Chris Kemlo (Oshawa, Ont.) in 2021, worked seven innings and the reliever the final two as the class-A Lake Elsinore Storm beat up on the Inland Empire 66ers 15-0 before 1,776 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.

Striking out seven, Hawkins didn’t allow a base runner, as he set down the 66er like this ...

First

Infield pop up.

Ground out to catcher.

Fly ball to centre.

Second

Strike out swinging.

A swinging strike out of David Calabrese (Maple, Ont.)

Fly ball to centre.

Third

Ground ball to first.

Strike out swinging.

Strike out swinging.

Fourth

Ground ball back to Hawkins.

Grounder to first.

Liner to second.

Fifth

Pop out to catcher.

Calabrese flies out to right.

Bunt attempt, batter out 2-to-3.

Sixth

Lines out to first.

Called out on strikes.

Strikes out swinging.

Seventh

Pops out to second.

Strikes out swinging.

Flies out to centre.

That was 21 up ... and 21 down. In his outing, as he faced the seven-inning minimum of batters. Hawkins threw 78 pitches (55 for strikes, 70.5%). He recorded five ground ball outs, four on fly balls and seven on whiffs. He even his record at 4-4 and lowered his ERA to 4.77.

Garrett Hawkins had a night to remember on July 1 in his start versus Inland Empire 66’ers in the class-A California League. And no doubt it was the best one of his very young pro career. In a 15-0 victory, he pitched seven hitless and scoreless innings. He was perfect and faced the minimum 21 batters, and struck out seven. His teammate Alan Mundo then followed up with two hitless innings to complete the nine inning no-hitter, and it turned out to be the very first in the history of the Lake Elsinore franchise, which extends over 50 years. It was a spectacular way to celebrate Canada Day. Hawkins was named by Minor League Baseball Network as Pitcher of the Week in the Low A California League, for the period June 27 to July 3, 2022.
