Official University of Hawaii Athletics News Release
University of Hawai'i baseball redshirt junior pitcher Carter Loewen signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Loewen becomes the second Rainbow Warrior to be drafted or signed during the 2020 off-season.
Loewen finished his Hawai'i career with 18 appearances, with seven in 2020. The right-handed pitcher recorded his first career save for the Rainbow Warriors in a 3-1 win over #2 Vanderbilt February 29. Loewen struck out a career-high six batters in 2020 and held batters to a .222 average for his career.
As a redshirt-junior, Loewen pitched scoreless outings in his first five games of 2020 and in six of his seven games of the year. Loewen's only runs against him came at Vanderbilt and their 11th inning walk-off three-run home run.
Loewen redshirted his first year on campus in Manoa for a surgery. The rehab process progressed and as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, Loewen pitched in 10 games. Loewen was on pace to have a career year before the COVID-19 pandemic shut the season down.
Loewen becomes the second right-handed pitcher out of Hawai'i to sign free agent contracts in the past three years. Former Hawai'i pitcher Jackson Rees signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018.
With the MLB Draft being reduced to five rounds, MLB teams were able to sign an unlimited amount of undrafted free agents for a maximum signing bonus of $20,000.
