What’s the best way to top off your first weekend in professional baseball?
How about with a walk-off home run?
That’s what Eric Hartman (St. Albert, Alta.) did for the Atlanta Braves’ class-A Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday.
With the GreenJackets trailing the Columbia Fireflies (class-A Kansas City Royals) 12-11 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Hartman belted a two-run blast off fellow Canadian Jordan Woods (Oakville, Ont.) who was making his first relief appearance of the season.
It was Hartman’s third hit of the game and his sixth in his first three games for the GreenJackets.
Batting cleanup and playing left field, Hartman also socked a two-run home run for the GreenJackets on Friday to help them to a 12-7 victory over the Fireflies.
On Saturday, the versatile Hartman started at second base and had a single.
In other words, the Okotoks Dawgs Academy and Junior National Team grad began his pro career with hits in three consecutive games. In all, the 18-year-old Canuck, who was selected in the 20th round of the 2024 MLB draft by the Braves, went 6-for-14, good for a .429 batting average.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week for the period from March 31 to April 7 … the best start of the 52 Canucks in the minors.
