Milton Red Sox’s Kevin Greer.

COBA Major Week XIV Recap

By Dan Estey

The Milton Red Sox had a light week in league play as they had only one contest to help them get ready for the Ontario senior Elimination Tournament in Windsor. The Sox hit the road to Clarkson Park to take on the Mississauga Southwest Twins.

Milton opened the scoring in this one as they plated three runs in the first inning for an early lead. The Twins would answer back as they plated single runs in both the first and second to cut the lead to 3-2. The Sox would add another pair of runs in the third inning as they restored their three runs lead at 5-2.

The middle innings were a bit slow as Southwest would score a run in the fifth to cut the Milton lead to 5-3 after six innings. The Red Sox would answer again though as they added a pair of runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-3.

Mississauga SW would come roaring back though as they scored a run in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth to tie the game 7-7. Not giving up, the scrappy Red Sox would keep pushing and were able to push across two more runs and they made this lead stand this time as the final score was 9-7 for Milton.

Jason Schneider led the 14-hit attack at the plate for Milton going 3-for-4 with a walk, a pair of runs and two RBIs. Shawn Chalmers was also 3-for-4 with three singles and four RBI while Kevin Greer was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three runs and two RBI. Justin Newbold was also 2-for-4 with a double while Kalen Winkler (3 R), Steve Lauzon (RBI) and Evan Cruickshank (R) all had a hit to round out the offense.

On the hill, the Red Sox used several pitchers in preparation for the Eliminations. Chris Cloes threw the first two innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out four.

Tyler MacKillop was next for three innings allowing one run on three hits. He walked four and struck out two. Ian Zettle went the next 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out two. Jason Schneider collected the win throwing the last 1 2/3 innings allowing nothing across the board and struck out three batters.
