We are still a long way from Opening Day, but there has been plenty of good news for Quebec baseball fans in recent days.

We have already announced the signings of Quebecers Marcel-Maxime Lacasse and Raphaël Gladu with the Ottawa Titans and the Trois-Rivières Eagles respectively.

Now the Quebec Capitales have announced that David Glaude has signed a deal for the 2022 season, just as Miguel Cienfuegos and Jonathan Lacroix did before him.

Glaude, a Quebec City resident, was dominant last season with L’Equipe Quebec. He batted .308 with 27 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 75 runs. Those numbers helped earn him the Canadian Baseball Network’s 2021 Murray Zuk Award, as top offensive player in the foreign or independent ranks.

"At the beginning of the season last year, I thought this was going to be my last year in professional baseball, but only four days after our last playoff game, I already knew I wanted to come back and wear the colours of the Capitales,” said Glaude.

"I can't wait to join my teammates again to bring the championship back to Quebec City!"

Lacroix also under contract

Last week, the Capitales announced that outfielder Jonathan Lacroix had signed a contract for next season.

Lacroix, a native of Quebec City, was the starting centre fielder for L’Equipe Canada in 2021 and his defence was solid throughout the season. He who made only two errors in 93 games. At the plate, the left-handed hitter, who played in the Houston Astros’ organization in 2018 and 2019, maintained a .258 batting average, slamming 20 doubles, three triples and four home runs.

"With his performance last year, Jonathan deserves to return to the team, especially considering his excellent second half of the season," said Capitales manager Patrick Scalabrini.

Just like Miguel Cienfuegos

Earlier this fall, the Capitales signed Miguel Cienfuegos to a contract after selecting the 24-year-old left-hander in the draft of L’Equipe Quebec players to be shared by the Capitales and the Trois-Rivières Eagles.

The former all-star with the Laval Pirates of the Quebec Elite Junior Baseball League had a phenomenal season in 2021, posting a 10-6 record in more than 123 innings.
