Mets promote respected Jay Horwitz

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons played 18 games in the majors with the New York Mets, 11 seasons and 962 games in the minors and managed the Blue Jays for 1,565 games, so he has seen a pre-game promotion or bobble head or two. Only one sits on his desk _ the likeness of his pal, Jay Horwitz, the Mets PR man who was promoted on Wednesday.

METS PR LEGEND JAY HORWITZ TO TAKE ON NEW ROLE

Alumni Public Relations and Team Historian will be Focus

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The New York Mets say legendary Mets Vice President of media relations, Jay Horwitz, will be transitioning into the newly created role of Vice President, Alumni Public Relations and Team Historian effective Oct. 1, 2018.

“Jay has dedicated his life to this organization,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. “He is part of the fabric of the Mets and lent support to managers, coaches and players while ensuring the media had what they needed. He is an icon in the industry. This new role will allow him to continue his extraordinary relationship with our alumni and help promote Mets history.”

With next year marking the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Mets 1969 World Series Championship, Horwitz will be evolving his role to focus more on broadening the Mets’ alumni base and serve as our inaugural team historian. Horwitz brings a unique and vast array of experience and knowledge of media, the game and New York Mets history. Jay’s special relationship with fans and alumni, bolstered through nearly 40 years with the Mets, make him the optimal person to cultivate Mets history, side by side with our alumni, for 2019’s celebration and all those yet to come.

The bobblehead of Jay Horwitz, a rabid fan of the New York’s best NFL team — the Buffalo Bills - sits on manager Johhn Gibbons desk.

“I’m ready for this new chapter in my life,” said Horwitz. “I’m looking forward to working with players, managers and coaches that I’ve known for close to four decades. My goal is to expand the Mets alumni family.”

Horwitz, who has been with the Mets since April 1, 1980, has received many accolades during his tenure, including:

_ Fishel Award winner in 1998, which is given to the top Media Relations person in baseball.

·_ Munson Media Hero Award recipient in 2007 for his outstanding contributions, dedication, and hard work for the media community.

·_ Inducted into the Fairleigh Dickinson University Hall of Fame in 2007.
