Ryan Marton headed for UNLV Rebels

Ex-Mississauga Tiger RHP Ryan Marton (Toronto, Ont.) is transferring from Midland College to the UNLV Rebels.

Ryan Marton is turning in his chaps.

RHP Marton (Toronto, Ont.), who will pitch in his second season with the Midland Chaparrals next spring, is transferring from the JUCO world to the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels of NCAA Division I next fall.

Last spring Marton, a former Mississauga Tiger was 4-1 with Midland in 15 games, making two starts. He walked 25 and struck out 28 in 25 innings.

Marton pitched for coaches Greg Byron and Sean Travers with the Tigers. .

Austin Cates was selected in the seventh round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024 draft the fourth time in program history a UNLV student-athlete has been selected by the Blue Jays.

Cates ranked among the top 30 in Division I in total strikeouts on the season with 107, leading the Mountain West in strikeouts per nine innings (10.66). He earned All-Mountain West First Team honors, leading the team in wins (six), games started (14), innings pitched (90 1/3) and strikeouts (107).

Jays also went to UNLV to chose RHP Todd Stottlemyre, a first rounder (third over-all, January draft) in 1985, OF Eric Nielsen a 12th round selection in 2004, 20th round pick RHP Andrew McCulloch in 2000, Brent Johnson was a 44th round pick by the Jays in 2003 and C Harold Betts, a 46th rounder in 1996.

A total of 14 players were added to out Letters of Intent page, while three players were added to our 2025 Canadians in College list. Hey, it was Thanksgiving week south of the border.
