LEWISTON, Ida. – The UBC Thunderbirds showed tremendous resolve and bounce-back ability on Friday night, as they followed up a blowout loss with a clutch win over the Lewis-Clark State Warriors.
The split on the day means that the top seed (and right to host the Cascade Conference Championship) remains up for grabs. The T-Birds need to win one of the last two games of the series in order to top the CCC standings, while the Warriors need to win both.
Russell Young (Surrey, B.C.) had a great day in Friday's doubleheader, tallying three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored across the two games, including a massive home run late in the second outing to give the 'Birds a bit of breathing room.
David Draayers (Abbotsford, B.C.) and Kaden Zarowny (Strathmore, Alta.) were the other T-Birds to record hits in both games, while on the mound Will Anderson (Burnaby, B.C.) earned his fifth win of the year and Evan Hoegler (North Vancouver, B.C.) his first save in the second.
GAME ONE
The T-Birds certainly started out strong, going up 3-1 in the top of the second inning. First it was a Zarowny two-run double, before he was brought home by a single from Young.
It was all Warriors from there, however, as the home team scored 12 unanswered to win in a blowout. The 13-3 defeat marked the most lopsided loss in conference play for UBC this season, putting them under the gun for the second.
GAME TWO
The Thunderbirds certainly responded after the break between the two games, putting three runs on the board in the first inning. Three straight at-bats featured a Trent Lenihan (White Rock, B.C.) RBI single, Aaron Marsh (Nanaimo, B.C.) RBI double and Kyle Yip (Calgary, Alta.) sacrifice fly to get some momentum going.
A pair of Lewis-Clark throwing errors in the fourth helped stretch the UBC lead to 6-2, although the home team kept hanging around and cut the lead in half heading into the seventh. That's when Young came up with his biggest play of the day, launching a three-run home run to make it a 9-4 ballgame.
The Warriors refused to go away, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth and then getting a solo homer in the ninth to make UBC sweat, but Hoegler pulled it out with a pair of strikeouts in the final frame to seal the massive victory.
The third game of the series begins at 12:00 p.m. (P.T.) on Saturday in Lewiston.
