Windeler signs with Twins
LHP Niall Windeler, selected in the 19th round of this year’s draft by the Minnesota Twins from the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, has signed a pro contract.
Windeler (Toronto, Ont.) had three strong seasons for UBC going 14-11 record with a 3.36 ERA and 247 strikeouts in 40 career starts as the former Toronto Mets and Etobicoke Rangers lefty:
Was 5-4, with a 3.72 ERA and 105 strikeouts this season. He recorded his first-ever solo nine-inning no hitter in program history and tied Jeff Francis’ program record of 15 strikeouts in a single game.
Was 5-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 16 games -- 14 starts -- walking 35 and striking out 85 in 87 1/3 innings, holding opponents to .217 average in 2018.
Was 4-4 with a 2.94 in 13 games, making 11 starts as he walked 21 and striking out 57 in 70 1/3 innings, holding opponents to a .223 average in 2017.
The community based BC Premier League (PBL) organization, the UBC Thunder, has produced its first draft pick. RHP Eli Saul (Vancouver, BC) was selected in the 29th round by the Texas Rangers.
Saul was the only high school player selected from the PBL this year in what is the Thunder’s second year.
