Gareth Morgan, Cole Bauml share CBN POW, Week XIII

Gareth Morgan and Cole Bauml were seperated by a year and a day at draft time.

Yet the two outfielders were united as one when it came time to select the Canadian Baseball Network minor league player of the week.

Morgan was selected in the second round (74th over-all) of the 2014 draft by the Seattle Mariners from the Ontario Blue Jays.

And Bauml was chosen in the 10th round (310th over-all) of the 2015 draft by the Detroit Tigers from the Northern Kentucky Golden Norse.

Morgan (North York, Ont.) hit .588 (10-for-17) with three RBIs for the Rookie-Class Arizona League Mariners to lead all Canucks in the minors while Bauml (Meunster, Sask.) batted .522 (12-for-23) with four RBIs for the class-A Connecticut Tigers. Bauml had the most hits of the 73 Canadians in the minors.

How Bauml’s week that was went as he ...

_ Went 3-for-4 playing right field as Connecticut edged thhe Lowell Spinners 4-3 before 1,936 fans at Sen. Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn. He singled to right in the third, singled to right in the fourth and was thrown out at the plate and singled to centre in the sixth and was thrown out attempting to steal second,  

_ Was 3-for-5 playing right field in a 5-3 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones in front of 4,058 fans at MCU Park. He doubled to left and scored in the two-run third, singled to right and stole second in the fifth, singled to left and scored the game winner in the 10th.
 
_ Was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in a 5-4 win against Brooklyn before 6,016 at MCU Park. He doubled to left to knock in a pair of runs tying the score with the four-run second, doubled to right leading off the fifth and scored the eventual winning run and singled to centre in the sixth.

_ Was hitless in a 5-4 loss to Brooklyn before 5,684 fans at MCU Park.   
 
_ Was 2-for-3 in a 3-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters in front of 4,976 fans at Sen. Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium. He reached on an infield single in the third and scored the first run of the game and reached on an infield single in the fifth.  

_ Was 1-for-4 with an RBI playing left field in a 6-4 win against Williamsport in front of 945 fans. He singled to right field in the fourth.

Bauml finished the week hitting .433 (13-for-30) on the season with four doubles and five RBIs in 14 games.

How the week that was went for Morgan as he ...

_ Didn’t play in a 5-4 win over the Cubs at Peoria Stadium. 1B Ismael Pena (Montreal, Que.) singled and knocked in a run. 

_ He was 2-for-5 playing centre field with a triple in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at Peoria Stadium. He tripled to left leading off the second and scored for a 2-0 lead and singled to centre in the fifth.   

_ Didn’t play in a 7-0 loss to the Rangers at Peoria Stadium. Pena was 1-for-4 with a double.

_ Was 2-for-3 in a 4-3 loss to the Rangers at Surprise Stadium. He singled to left in the fourth and singled to centre in the ninth and was on third when the final out was made.
  
_ Was 3-for-5 with a pair of triples and two RBIs as the Mariners beat the Royals 11-5 at Surprise Stadium. Pena singled and drove in a run and stole a base. Morgan tripled to right and knocked in a pair of runs and scored as the Mariners went up 4-2 in the third, tripled to centre in the fifth and singled to left and scored in the six-run ninth.

_ Was 3-for-4 in a 4-3 win against the Giants at Peoria Stadium. He singled to right in the third, singled to right and scored in the sixth tying the score 3-3 and singled to right in the seventh.

Counting two games at class-A Bakersfield Morgan is batting .381 on the season with three doubles, four triples and eight RBIs in 10 games. He has an OPS of 1.056.

Cole Bauml had a week to remember in the Detroit Tigers system.

After missing the entire 2015 season due to injury, Jordan Romano is now showing that his recovery is progressing quite well. This week he made two excellent appearances and, although he was not involved in the decision in either game, his performance was notable. On June 29th in a 2-1 loss to Great Lakes Loons he threw four and a third innings, gave up four base hits and one earned run, while striking out six Great Lakes hitters. Then on July 5th in a 12-5 win over Dayton Dragons, he pitched four scoreless innings, surrendering three base hits while striking out four Dayton batters. These two appearances improved his record in five games with Lansing in the Single A Midwest League, to 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

Two more solid outings this week for Scott Diamond of the Buffalo Bisons, resulting in one win and one no decision. On June 29th in a 4-3 win over Louisville Bats he pitched seven innings, gave up four base hits and two earned runs while striking out five Louisville hitters, but was not involved in the decision. On July 4th in a 5-2 victory over Rochester Red Wings he again threw seven innings, gave up four base hits and one earned run while striking out two Rochester batters to earn the win. He improved his record in 16 starts with Triple A Buffalo Bisons, to 6-7 with a 3.33 ERA.

Evan Grills made his ninth appearance of the season for the Hooks on July 2nd in a 6-3 victory over Springfield Cardinals. He pitched seven innings gave up eight base hits and three earned runs while striking out three Springfield batters, to earn his third win in the Double A Texas League thus far. He improved his record with Corpus Christi to 3-1 with 1 Save and a 2.19 ERA. His overall record for 2016, including five appearances in an earlier stint with Single A Lancaster JetHawks, now stands at 6-2, with one Save and a 2.62 ERA.

Based on his excellent numbers with the Capitales in previous years, it’s no surprise Karl Gelinas has again assumed his role as a key starter for Quebec in 2016. He made two starts this week and earned the win in each game. On June 29th in a 4-1 win over Trois Rivieres Eagles he pitched six innings gave up seven base hits and one earned run while striking out one Eagles hitter to pick up the win. He followed that up on July 5th in a 6-3 victory over Rockland Boulders, throwing six innings, gave up four base hits and two earned runs while striking out seven Rockland batters, to earn his second win of the week. His overall IND Can Am League record in six appearances with Quebec, now stands at 4-1 with a 5.02 ERA.
