Blue Jays from Away

The DSL Blue Jays finally made up a game suspended almost two weeks ago, adding to Wednesday’s game total. The Blue Jays’ affiliates only won three of nine games on Wednesday.

Buffalo Bisons 0, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 6
The Bisons came out flat the day after their double header in Scranton, losing 6-0 to the the RailRiders, getting only three hits and committing two errors. Casey Lawrence was the beneficiary of the shoddy defense, making one error himself and getting another from Matt Dominguez, causing all five of the runs he allowed to be unearned. He threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Pat Venditte stranded both of the runners he inherited from Lawrence and pitched 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Ben Rowen allowed the final run in the eighth inning, allowing a solo home run among two hits with two strikeouts.

Ryan Goins, Chris Colabello and Darrell Ceciliani each had hits for the Bisons.

Player of the Game: Casey Lawrence

Roster Notes: Bo Schultz was optioned to the Buffalo Bisons

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, Harrisburg Senators 5
The Fisher Cats emerged from their double header on Tuesday with a little more energy than the Buffalo Bisons did but still lost 5-4 to the Harrisburg Senators, despite nearly matching each other in offensive production. Ryan Lavarnway was 2/3 with an RBI, a walk and a double while Emilio Guerrero drove in a run and stole a base, going 2/4. Shane Opitz had two RBI, getting one hit in four at bats and Dwight Smith and Roemon Fields each had a double.

Shane Dawson had a strong outing, allowing just two runs on four hits (including a two-run home run) and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings of work but didn’t figure into the decision. Murphy Smith both blew the save and took a loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits (including a home run) in two innings.

Player of the Game: Shane Dawson and Ryan Lavarnway

Dunedin Blue Jays 10, Lakeland Flying Tigers 9
A total of 31 hits, 19 runs and four errors. Those were the combined totals between the two teams in the Dunedin squeaker of a 10-9 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Canadian catcher Mike Reeves led the hit parade for the Blue Jays, going 4/5 and coming just a triple short of the cycle, hitting two singles, a double and a home run, driving in two and scoring twice. Anthony Alford rocked two triples and a double, scoring three times and driving in two while Richard Urena was also a triple short of the cycle (both he and Reeves should borrowed one of Alford’s), hitting a single, double and home run and driving in three. Jonathan Davis, who hadn’t been hitting much lately, had three hits of his own, two singles and a triple, driving in one, scoring twice and stealing a base. Gunnar Heidt was 2/4 with a double, a walk and an RBI while D.J. Davis was 1/5.

The news wasn’t as good for the pitchers with Connor Fisk and Adonys Cardona taking the brunt of the damage. Fisk allowed five runs on eight hits (including two home runs) over 5 1/3 innings. Jose Fernandez put out the first temporarily, throwing 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit, striking out one and walking one. Cardona started the eighth inning and gave up four hits and a walk, leaving without getting an out and was ultimately charged with four runs (all earned). Dusty Isaacs relieved him and, while he allowed one of the two inherited runners to score, he struck out four batters, gave up just one hit and didn’t allow any runs of his own over two innings to earn the win.

Player of the Game: Mike Reeves and Richard Urena
