BMOC: Black, Dressler, Romanin, Foster

Another week, another solid display put on by Canadians in the college baseball world. This weeks edition of the BMOC’s features some new faces that put up impressive performances for their respective schools. Canadians continued to impress and make a name for themselves over the last week.

Another familiar face headlines BMOC’s:
Michael Foster was at it again this past weekend for the Northeastern University Huskies, this time however it was started with his defence. His Huskies took on Kansas to kick off the weekend and Foster preserved an early 1-0 NU lead with a spectacular diving catch in centre field that stranded three KU runners. He would also go on to hit an run-scoring fly ball in a 6-4 loss to the Jayhawks. Foster’s hot weekend did not end there. It was the Kentucky Wildcats next up for NU. Foster had the only multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in a 5-4 loss. Foster continued his torrid pace in a win over the Chicago State Cougars. He reached safely in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored. Foster has now had a multi-hit game in five of his teams first eight games of the season.

Dressler continues his perfect season: [steven dressler]
Steven Dressler of Cisco College improved his record to 3-0 with a win over Concordia University in Texas. Dressler would throw 6 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run with 10 strikeouts. He is having a career year for Cisco as he has thrown 23.1 innings with a 0.39 ERA and 29 punch outs. The former Toronto Blue Jays’ 0.39 ERA ranked third in the nation amongst NJCAA Division 1 pitchers who have worked 23 or more innings.

Happy Birthday to me:
Mattingly Romanin gave himself a birthday present when his Chicago State Cougars took on the Villanova Wildcats this past weekend. On his birthday, Romanin went a cool 2-for-4 with an RBI. He then flashed the glove, gunning down a Villanova runner on a relay from right field. Romanin’s relay was right on the money, getting the runner at third to help out his pitcher. That was not all for Romanin, he would go on to hit a home run against Michael Foster’s Northeastern Huskies. Not a bad weekend for the former Terrier even though his Cougars are now just 2-8.

Stewart solid despite Griffs loss:
Devon Stewart threw a quality start in an attempt to help the Canisius Golden Griffin earn a win over Delaware. Unfortunately for the Griffs, Stewart’s seven innings, three earned runs, four strikeouts and a walk was not enough as Delaware walked away with a 5-1 victory. Canisius falls back to .500 with a 5-5 record under head coach Mike McCrae.

Two more Canadians shine for Griffins:
[jp stevenson] Freshman JP Stevensonearned his first career collegiate win over the weekend. Stevenson would throw four innings of relief as the Golden Griffins would go on to pound the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 10-3. Canisius stroked 12 hits off of UNC Asheville pitching. Sophomore Jake Lumleywould go on to have three of those hits to help in the victory.

Fernandez-Beltran evens record:
Fernando Fernandez-Beltran picked up the win for New Mexico Junior College over Trinidad State Junior College this past week. Fernandez-Beltran, a 2012 Philadelphia Phillies draft pick, threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The Chateauguay, Que. product would go on to strike out five and walk four to even his record at 1-1 on the season. New Mexico is perfect in conference play with a record of 4-0 and are 14-7 overall.

Junior College success continued:
J.D. Osborne had himself a game this past week. The Polk State College third basemen went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs against Sante Fe College. He is currently ranked 176th on Perfect Games top 200 JUCO players.

Shortstop Louis Boyd is also playing some good baseball in the NJCAA. This past week he went 1-for-4 for Cochise College in their win over South Mountain Community College. He also held a 1.000 OPS for the Apaches.

Antchak continues good season:
Sophomore Brad Antchak of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College had a 1-for-4 (double) day as his team took on Northern Oklahoma College-Tankawa. NEO would go on to split the doubleheader with the Mavericks and improve their record to an impressive 5-1 on the season. Antchak has had a good start to the season as he currently owns a .278 average with a home run and 11 RBIs through just six games.

Big D is for Degano [degano]
RHP Jeff Degano (Surrey, BC) deserved a better fate at the Indiana State Sycamores fell 1-0 to Georgia Tech. He allowed a solo home run. Degano had another quality start pitching seven innings, allowing three hits, one run, one walk and struck out six. Earlier this season he beat Grambling State 15-5 as he pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs — four earned — on eight hits and one run, while striking out seven. His over win was an 8-1 win over the No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk, fanning five.

Terriers round up:
Cole Peragine had himself a game against the No. 3-ranked Florida Gators (10-1). Peragine went 2-for-3 with a walk in the Stony Brook Seawolves 6-2 loss to the Gators. Peragine reached base in seven of 12 trips to the plate in the series.

Toby Handley snapped an 0-for-22 skid against the Gators with a pair of hits in Game 2.

Cal Quantrill improved to 2-0 on the season as he tossed seven innings of three-run ball to down the Rice Owls. He would strike out seven and walk three to pick up the win.

The UBC Thunderbirds ran their record to 13-5 with a 3-1 win over 20th-ranked The Masters Mustangs. 1B Bruce Yari was the hero with the scored tied 1-1 in the eighth, he laced an RBI double to right field. UBC also beat 24th Redlands in a non-conference game with Yari knocking in a run. He is hitting. 355 and leads the T-Birds with 22 RBIs.

TJ Baker owns a 1.69 ERA for the Salt Lake College Bruins. Opponents are hitting just. 227 off Baker. The Bruins are 9-6.

3B David Head had a great week at the plate and has brought his average up to. 310 for Northern Kentucky Golden Norse.

Ontario Blue Jays round up:
Daniel Pinero would drive in the tying run and the Virginia Cavaliers would go on to a walk off win against the Cornell Big Red. Pinero took a 2-2 pitch into right-center field to tie the game. UVA would go on to sweep Cornell. Pinero is currently ranked #5 on the 2015 Canadian Baseball Network draft list.

[johnny caputo] Toronto Mets round up:
Johnny Caputo would give the Stony Brook Seawolves a glimmer of hope in the top of the first inning against the Florida Gators with a three run home run. Unfortunately the excitement was short lived as the Gators went on to pound out 15 hits and 14 runs on their way to a game 2 victory. Stony Brook fell to 2-7 on the season.

Tim Black saves Chippewas:
Tim Black helped his Central Michigan Chippewas to a double-header sweep over the Texas State Bobcats this past week. In Game 1, Black would record the final out of the eighth, stranding the bases loaded before ending the game with a double play in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season in a 9-6 win. Black would be called upon once again in Game 2, earning the win and improving his season record to 2-0. The 6-foot-3, 245 pound Mount Hope native currently holds a 3.24 ERA on the season.
